Prep your car for spring

 Permanent link

Janet AndersonNow that the weather is getting warmer (do I hear a collective cheer?), it’s important to get your car ready for spring. While some things may require a professional, there are plenty of things you can do yourself.

Top off your fluids. Your wiper fluid is probably running low from all that stuff that kicked up from the streets this winter. That’s easy to do yourself. Next time your car is due for an oil change, make sure you or the shop checks your other fluids as well.

Check your wiper blades. Take a good look at how well your wiper blades are working. You should replace old blades or clean newer ones. Don't forget the rear blade if you have one.

Check your tire pressure. This is a simple task you should be doing every month. If you maintain the ideal pressure, you will save money at the pump and prolong the life of your tires.

Don’t forget to check the spare! If your spare tire isn’t in good condition, it’s not a safe replacement option if you ever get a flat. Make sure your spare is rust-free and properly inflated.

Give your car a thorough spring-cleaning. Months of driving in snow and salt mean your car deserves a good wash, both inside and out. Wash your vehicle thoroughly as soon as temperatures rise and stay above freezing. Be sure to hit the underside of your vehicle, too. Late March or early April is a good time to give your car a coat of wax.

Get your wheel alignment checked. It’s pothole season! Potholes can cause serious damage to your tires when your wheels get out of alignment. Have the alignment checked by a professional. You might also want to consider a tire rotation.

Make sure you have the appropriate insurance coverage. Poorly written policies happen more than you think. Member Benefits’ personal insurance consultants can review your current insurance coverage to help you fix common errors and avoid paying too much.
