Resolve to stay safe this year

fire extinguishers

Still thinking about your New Year’s resolution...or gave up on your first one? Here’s a resolution anyone can accomplish—taking some common-sense steps to ensure the safety of your family in your home. Check these off your list and feel good about following through on your resolution this year!

  • Make sure you have a smoke detector on every level of the home and inside and outside each sleeping area. If they are more than 10 years old, purchase new ones. Put in fresh batteries.
  • If you don’t have a carbon monoxide detector, get one for each level of the house. Change batteries in current ones. Replace detectors over seven years old.
  • Use a portable, multi-purpose fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory. Be sure you know how to use it.
  • Have more than one story at your house? Purchase a rescue ladder that attaches to the window casing for the upstairs bedrooms in case of fire. At least one of our insurance consultants at Member Benefits had to use one at his home.
  • Make an evacuation plan in case of fire, storm, tornado, or other emergency. Everyone should practice the plan and know where to meet each other outside. Run through it at least once a year. Get plans and information from the National Fire Protection Association.
  • If you have children, make sure you’ve childproofed your home, placed poisons out of reach (including medications), and secured TVs and windows.
